SPRINGFIELD – Home City Development Inc., a Springfield-based affordable housing developer, recently received approval for a 34-unit mixed-income apartment complex in the town of Pelham.
The company, in a press release, announced the approval of the Pelham Zoning Appeal Board’s blanket permit.
The two-building housing complex is planned at 20-22 Amherst Road, and is the first affordable housing development in the county town of Hampshire, Home City Development said. It will be known as Amethyst Brook Apartments.
“At Home City Development, we are touched by the trust the Town of Pelham has placed in us,” said Tom Kegelman, General Manager. “We will do our best to restore that confidence with a beautiful, sustainable project, providing affordable housing to those who are least able to find it in today’s housing market.
The complex will be designed to “passive house” energy efficiency standards, Home City Development said. The complex will include a stormwater management system and charging stations for electric vehicles.
The company must finalize the financing of the project, and the start date has not yet been determined. Once launched, the project is expected to be completed within 12 to 14 months.
Other Home City Development projects in the area include the ongoing construction of a $ 20 million, 42-unit affordable housing project at the former Elias Brookings School on Hancock Street in Springfield, which was badly damaged by a tornado in 2011.
Home City Development is a non-profit developer of multi-family and mixed-use properties in Western Massachusetts. It was founded in 1968 as Better Homes Inc. by the Springfield Chamber of Commerce.
The Pelham project design team is led by Architecture Environment Life of East Longmeadow. The Berkshire Design Group of Northampton will take care of the civil engineering and landscaping.
